How can young conservation scientists learn to be tolerant and work with diverse partners to save nature?

We asked this question to African and European researchers in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

The answer is that Context, Cooperation and Communication are crucial for successful science.

We call them the 3Cs

Context is made of history, norms, traditions, and language.

The research context in Serengeti-Mara is shaped by the colonial history of Europe and Africa, gender hierarchies, cultural norms, scientific traditions, and language.

Good cooperation is a give and take between open-minded scientists.

We have the respect to share ideas and the courage to enter debates about bias and corruption in science.

Communication is listening, thinking before one speaks, and working to understand your collaborators.

We are scientists with different languages, backgrounds, institutions, and different agenda.
We work to build common understanding.

The 3Cs are important across the lifespan of a project.

When we communicate, cooperate, and contextualize among ourselves

we are better able to contribute to society
